What Is Interlining and What Is It Used For?

Interlining is an intermediate textile layer applied between a garment's outer fabric and its lining (or inner face), giving the garment shape, crisp structure and durability. If a shirt collar, a jacket's chest front, a trouser waistband or the placket of an evening dress sits neat and stays that way, there is most likely a correctly chosen interlining behind it.

At Telpa Tekstil we have specialized in interlining since 1992 as a consultative interlining importer and wholesale supplier. You can source every type of interlining you need quickly and reliably through Online Tela.

What does interlining do?

Interlining is a component that stays invisible on its own yet defines the quality of the garment. Its main functions:

Fusible interlining and sew-in interlining

Interlinings fall into two groups by application method:

Just as important as applying fusible interlining correctly is using the right temperature, pressure and time; incorrect application causes the interlining to delaminate.

Where is interlining used?

How is interlining sold? Unit and weight

Interlining is sold by roll — that is, by the meter; not by the box. For example, a product is offered as Roll 125 m. The thickness of an interlining is expressed by its weight (GSM): the higher the weight, the stiffer and fuller-bodied the interlining. The right weight is chosen according to how fine the fabric is and how much structure is desired.

Choosing the right interlining

The wrong interlining can ruin a garment within a few washes. The fabric type, the area of use and the washing conditions determine the right interlining. If you are unsure, consult our expert team — we recommend the interlining best suited to your job.

FAQ

Are interlining and lining the same thing?

No. Lining is a visible fabric that covers the inside of a garment; interlining is the intermediate layer placed between the outer fabric and the lining, providing shape and durability.

What unit is interlining sold in?

Interlining is sold by roll, that is, by the meter. It is stated in the product name, e.g. (Roll 125 m.). Only certain auxiliary products such as Tex-Fix may come in different units.

Which interlining is used for shirts?

Shirt collars and cuffs use a wash-resistant, specially coated woven shirt interlining. Economical paper (nonwoven) interlining is not recommended for shirts.
