What does interlining do?
Interlining is a component that stays invisible on its own yet defines the quality of the garment. Its main functions:
- Gives shape: Keeps areas such as collars, cuffs, plackets and waistbands crisp and neatly structured.
- Adds durability: Reinforces frequently used and washed areas, extending the life of the garment.
- Reduces wrinkling: Gives the fabric body, preventing creasing and sagging.
- Simplifies production: Stops the fabric from shifting during sewing, ensuring clean workmanship.
Fusible interlining and sew-in interlining
Interlinings fall into two groups by application method:
- Fusible interlining: One side is coated with a heat-activated adhesive resin. It is bonded to the fabric with heat, pressure and time. It is the most widely used type today.
- Sew-in (non-fusible) interlining: Contains no adhesive; it is attached to the fabric by stitching. Preferred in classic tailoring and certain specialty products.
Just as important as applying fusible interlining correctly is using the right temperature, pressure and time; incorrect application causes the interlining to delaminate.

How is interlining sold? Unit and weight
Interlining is sold by roll — that is, by the meter; not by the box. For example, a product is offered as Roll 125 m. The thickness of an interlining is expressed by its weight (GSM): the higher the weight, the stiffer and fuller-bodied the interlining. The right weight is chosen according to how fine the fabric is and how much structure is desired.
