A shirt collar whose points lift up, ripple or bubble after a few washes — it is one of the complaints garment makers and tailors hear most often. The customer blames the fabric, the maker blames the workmanship; yet the root of the problem is usually in neither. The collar is the only part of a shirt held up by an invisible layer, and that layer is called interlining. If the wrong interlining was chosen, or the right interlining was fused incorrectly, the collar will curl sooner or later.
The good news: collar curling is not a defect written in fate; it is a fault with known causes that can be completely prevented at the production stage. In this article we break down the real reasons behind curling one by one, explain why the permanent fix runs through woven shirt interlining, and give manufacturers a practical checklist that can be applied in five minutes.
The four main causes of collar curling
1. Wrong or cheap interlining — especially paper (nonwoven) interlining
In most curled collars the story is the same: paper interlining was put into the collar to cut costs. Paper interlining is the most economical member of the interlining family and a legitimate product in its own field — it exists for cost-focused, budget-friendly production. But it was not designed for an area like a shirt collar that constantly bends, absorbs sweat and is washed frequently. When used in shirts, it usually causes problems after 3–5 washes: the bond weakens, bubbles form on the surface, the collar loses its shape and the points begin to curl.
The point here is not to say "cheap interlining is bad"; it is to use every interlining in its right place. Paper interlining does its job in economical products; it does not do the job of a shirt collar.
2. Incorrect fusing: temperature, time and pressure
Even the right interlining will not save the collar if it is fused incorrectly. With fusible interlining, three variables determine the bond: temperature, time and pressure.
- If the temperature is too low, the adhesive does not melt fully; the interlining bonds only superficially to the fabric. Everything looks fine at the press, then separation starts in the first washes — this is the most insidious form of curling, because the fault surfaces months later.
- If the temperature is too high or the time too long, the adhesive can strike through to the face of the fabric, and the interlining can lose its body and elasticity; the collar turns glassy or goes limp.
- If the pressure is insufficient or uneven, the bond stays patchy; one part of the collar holds while another does not — that is how rippling is born.
Leaving the piece to cool on a flat surface after fusing is also a step that must not be skipped; a piece bent before the adhesive has fully set will memorize that bent shape.
3. Washing and shrinkage mismatch
A shirt is one of the most frequently washed items in the wardrobe. With every wash, both the fabric and the interlining move a little. If the fabric and the interlining shrink at different rates, the two layers pull against each other and the collar ripples and curls. Hot washing, hard spinning and tumble drying magnify this effect. Quality shirt interlining is made to move together with the shirt fabric and withstand repeated washing; cheap alternatives lose this harmony within the first washes. For manufacturers, the practical meaning is this: when choosing collar interlining, decide not only by the first look at the press but by the wash cycles the shirt will see over the years.
4. Fabric–interlining mismatch
A heavy, stiff interlining on a fine voile, or an overly light interlining on a heavy oxford fabric — both are wrong. Weight and hand feel must be chosen to match the fabric; the crisp stand wanted in the collar must be achieved without crushing the fabric. The permanent fix: woven shirt interlining
The permanent solution to the curling problem is using the right category for the collar area: woven shirt interlining. The reason lies in its structure:
- A woven structure behaves like fabric. Unlike nonwoven (paper) interlining, woven interlining moves together with the shirt fabric in washing and ironing; the two layers do not pull against each other.
- Its adhesive is a full-coverage coating layer. In shirt interlining, the adhesive is applied as a homogeneous coating across the surface; the bond is spread over the entire area, and the risk of patchy separation under repeated washing drops.
- It withstands washing. Shirt interlining is made in the knowledge that the shirt will be washed frequently throughout its life; the shape stays as it was on day one.

Fusing conditions: take the numbers from the product
Exact figures circulate on the internet — "collar interlining is fused at this temperature, for this many seconds". The truth is that there is no single correct value: the ideal temperature, time and pressure vary with the interlining's adhesive type, its weight and your fabric. That is why we recommend two things:

- Whatever values you use, run a trial fusing with your own press, on your own fabric before moving to bulk production. The temperature on the press dial and the actual temperature at the platen can differ; the right setting is found only by testing.
A practical checklist for manufacturers
For workshops and garment makers who do not want to deal with collar returns, a list that can be run through in five minutes before production starts:
- Verify the category: Is the interlining going into the collar and cuffs really shirt interlining, or paper interlining put there to cut costs?
- Run a trial fusing: With every new roll of interlining and every new fabric, fuse a test piece before bulk production.
- Apply a peel check: On the cooled test piece, try to separate the interlining from a corner; if it comes away easily, your fusing settings are inadequate.
- Put it through a wash test: Wash and dry the test piece under real use conditions; check for bubbling, rippling and edge separation.
- Allow it to cool: Let pieces coming off the press cool on a flat surface, without bending them.
- Store the interlining correctly: Store rolls without crushing them, away from moisture and direct sunlight; storage conditions affect the adhesive.
- When unsure, ask: Send a photo of your fabric and its intended use, and get an interlining recommendation from an expert.
